- Romanian far-right populist Calin Georgescu has been barred from participating in May's presidential election rerun by the country's Central Electoral Bureau (BEC), triggering clashes between his supporters and police.
- Last year, Romania's constitutional court annulled November's first round of the vote - in which he came first - after intelligence revealed Russia had been involved in 800 TikTok accounts backing him.
- The BEC rejected his candidacy on Sunday, saying it "doesn't meet the conditions of legality", as he "violated the very obligation to defend democracy".
- Georgescu called that decision a "direct blow" to democracy. He now has 24 hours from Sunday's verdict to submit an official appeal to the top court, which should issue a ruling within 72 hours.
- On 26 February, Georgescu was arrested on his way to register as a candidate in the summer election, prompting tens of thousands of Romanians to march on Bucharest's streetsin protest.
- He was charged with attempting to overthrow constitutional order and membership of a neo-fascist organisation. He has denied all wrongdoing.
- The 62-year-old independent came from nowhere to win the first round of last year's election, the results of which were annulled just days before the second round of voting.
- One key to his sudden popularity was his promise to "restore Romania's dignity" and end subservience to the international organizations it belongs to, including Nato and the EU.
- Before last year's annulment, the pro-Russian politician told the BBC he would end all support for Ukraine if he was elected.
- Georgescu has also seen some support from the Trump administration.
- Last month, US Vice-President JD Vance accused Romania of annulling the elections based on the "flimsy suspicions" of Romanian intelligence and pressure from its neighbors.
- Meanwhile, Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu accused Elon Musk of a "form of interference" in Romania's elections, after the billionaire posted several messages of support for Georgescu. (BBC)
- More than 1,000 people have been killed in two days of clashes between gunmen and security forces linked to Syria's new Islamist rulers and fighters from Bashar al-Assad's Alawite sect in the country's coastal region, a war monitor said on Saturday.
- The casualties included 745 civilians, 125 members of the Syrian security forces and 148 fighters loyal to Assad, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
- The United States condemns the radical Islamist terrorists, including foreign jihadis, that murdered people in western Syria in recent days. The United States stands with Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities, including its Christian, Druze, Alawite, and Kurdish communities, and offers its condolences to the victims and their families.
- Syria’s interim authorities must hold the perpetrators of these massacres against Syria’s minority communities accountable. (U.S. State Department)

- Hunter Biden has told a federal judge he is facing severe financial difficulties and cannot afford to move forward with his lawsuit against a former aide to President Donald Trump.
- The son of former President Joe Biden sued Garrett Ziegler in 2023, accusing him and his non-profit Marco Polo of breaking the law by publishing an online database containing 128,000 emails taken from a laptop attributed to Mr Biden.
- Mr Ziegler has previously dismissed the lawsuit as "completely frivolous".
- In a court filing on Wednesday, Mr Biden's attorneys asked US District Judge Hernan D Vera to end the lawsuit, stating that he "has suffered a significant downturn in his income and has significant debt in the millions of dollars range". (BBC News)

- The staffer was reportedly caught and arrested.
- Over the weekend, pro-Hamas agitators defaced President Trump’s iconic golf course, Trump Turnberry, in Scotland.
- The terrorist sympathizers spray-painted slogans on several buildings and one of the greens, other greens were dug up and damaged.
- One of the greens was painted with the words “Gaza is not for sale.”
- Palestine Action boasted about the criminal acts on social media, sharing photos of the damage.
- Hundreds of protesters descended upon a Tesla dealership in Manhattan on Saturday, shattering the front doors before “occupying” the showroom.
- At least six of the demonstrators were arrested by the NYPD.
- The liberal activists were protesting against Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
- Elon Musk has revealed the big-name Democrat donors behind the protests at Tesla stores.
- Posting on the X platform that he owns, Musk said that he believes five groups are behind the protests, many of which have resorted to violence.
- However, these groups are all funded by ActBlue, the troubled Democratic Party fundraising organization backed by liberal billionaire donors including George Soros and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman.
