Speaking at a government toast ahead of Rosh Hashanah, Netanyahu indicated Israel’s operations against Iran are aimed at bringing about the regime’s fall. Twenty five years after September 11, a survey of Middle East scholars says most doubt today’s students can even identify who carried out the attacks.

• Netanyahu said he is “determined to do this,” adding that Israel is stronger than ever while its enemies are weaker than they have been.
• “We are determined to defend ourselves; we are determined to strike our enemies,” he continued, saying that while neither Iran nor any of Israel’s enemies are attacking right now, they can “make a mistake” and “suffer a blow they don’t even imagine.”
• His warning to Israel’s enemies: “Don’t mess with us. We know how to unite in times of difficulty, and it is currently the most powerful power in the Middle East.”

The US economy added 162,000 jobs in August 2026, more than double the consensus forecast, with upward revisions to June and July. Canada tariffs are now in effect.

• Nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000, more than double the consensus forecasts.
• The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%.
• June and July data saw positive upward revisions, adding a combined 55,000 more jobs than initially reported.
• Average hourly earnings increased by 11 cents, or 0.3%, to $32.53, a 3.1% increase over the year.
• The average workweek for all private nonfarm employees ticked up slightly to 34.4 hours.
• Leading sectors: bars, restaurants and utilities saw notable job creation. Information related sectors experienced some job losses.

11:00 · The Biden Blunders Behind Drug Price Controls

Phil Kerpen and Stephen Moore argue the comically misnamed Inflation Reduction Act imposed government price controls on prescription drugs, and that the Biden administration then made the regime far worse in practice than it was on paper.

• The law replaced the old noninterference principle, which used market average prices to set drug reimbursement, with a scheme letting the Secretary of Health and Human Services directly set prices through a sham negotiation. A manufacturer must agree or face a punitive seizure via a tax equal to 95% of the product’s total sales.
• That undermines the return on the investment of billions of dollars required to develop a new drug and bring it to market, resulting in fewer new cures and treatments.
• Biden’s Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services expanded the scheme’s scope by ignoring the statute’s clear lines in at least three ways.
• First, drugs with biosimilar competition are exempt because they already face intense price competition. The Biden CMS instead used biosimilar prices as comparators to justify more stringent controls.
• Second, CMS took the statutory term therapeutic alternatives and, without meaningful public input, built an entire pricing system that appears nowhere in the statute, benchmarking cutting edge complex cancer drugs against old style chemotherapy agents.
• Third, CMS bundled two insulins approved 17 years apart and called them one drug to clear the minimum sales threshold. Neither product qualified on its own, setting a precedent that nearly any drug could be dragged in through a bundling backdoor.
• Aggregate small molecule investment by smaller biotech companies has already fallen by 68% since the IRA passed. Investment targeting Medicare aged populations dropped 74%.
• A proposed rule released on June 12 would codify the Biden era guidance into law.
• The asks: halt Round 3 of price control negotiations before prices are set under Biden era rules, announce Round 4 selections will not proceed under the old methodology, restrict therapeutic alternatives to clinically appropriate substitutable drugs, restore market based competition criteria, and reassign the Biden era personnel driving the program.
• The authors also back fundamental FDA reforms, pro growth tax policy, strong global protection of intellectual property, and direct pay sales channels as an alternative to opaque insurer and PBM schemes.
